Q: I have a copy Noble Mushaf that has torn pages, what should I do with it; should I bury it in the ground or not?

A: It is permissible for you to bury it on the grounds of any Masjid. It is also permissible for you to burn it, thus imitating ‘Uthmaan (radi Allahu ‘anhu). With Allah lies all success and may the Peace and Blessing of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and companions.

Q: (This question) is in regards to the way in which, torn pages from the Mushaf or torn pages of books which have on them verses from the Qur’an are to be stored (and/or disposed of)?

A: That which is torn from the Qur’an, books, and pages that have on them verses from the Qur’an, are to be buried in a good place far from the paths and walkways of the people, as well as those places where rubbish and filth disposed of (therein).

(Another option) will be to burn them in order to safeguard and protect them fromany type of degradation, in accordance to the action of ‘Uthmaan (radi Allahu ‘anhu).

Fatwah # 6252

Q: A Mushaf that has in it errors (typos), is it better to burn it or bury it under soil? And is the Mushaf considered to have errors if the chapters areout of order?

A: Firstly, it is obligatory to correct the errors to whatever extent possible, thus preserving and safeguarding the Qur’an and the continuance of (ones) money (i.e. not wasting it). If it is not easy or possible to correct the errors then one should prevent it from being spread by terminating and disposing of it by either burning or burying it.

Secondly, it is a gross mistake to put verses of a chapter (of the Qur’an) in front of others verse (i.e. out of order), (in fact) it is Haraam, and with Allah lies all success and may the Peace and Blessing of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and companions.

Q: I found a (copy) of the Qur’an that had printing mistakes in it, in that the chapters where out of order. Is it permissible to read from it? If it is not permissible to read from it, what do you advise me to do with it, should I burn it or where should I put it?

A: Burn it or bury it in a clean place where the people do not walk nor garbage is thrown, and with Allah lies all success and may the Peace and Blessing of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and companions.

Fatwah # 176

Q: Is it permissible to burn Musaahif (copies of the Qur’an) that are torn or have therein errors (typos) and then bury them?

A: If the pages of the Mushaf have become old and worn out and thus torn due to reciting/reading them much, for example, or it becomes non-conducive to benefit from (that particular copy), or if there are found therein mistakes due to negligence when writing it, or printing and/or publishing errors, all of which cannot be corrected; then it is permitted to bury it without burning it. It is also permitted to burn and then bury it in a place that is far removed from rubbish, trash, paths and walkways. (Doing this) will safeguard it from any type of degradation and debasement, as well as a protection for the Qur’an so that there does not occur any confusion, distortion or dispute due to the spreading and circulation of copies of the Qur’an that have printing and/or publishing errors.

It has been confirmed in Saheeh al Bukhaaree in the chapter entitled, “The Collection of The Qur’an”, that ‘Uthmaan Bin ‘Afaan (radi Allahu ‘anhu) ordered four of the good and righteous reciters from the Sahaabah to transcribe copies of the Qur’an from the Mushaf which was gathered by the command of Abu Bakr (radi Allahu ‘anhu). When they completed this task, ‘Uthmaan sent out copies of these Qur’ans to every region. Then he ordered that all other pages and copies ofthe Qur’an be burnt. None of the Sahaabah disapproved of this except that which has been reported on Ibn Mas’ood (radi Allahu ‘anhu). However, he only disapproved of the people being limited to the copies of the Qur’an sent to them by ‘Uthmaan, not the burning of the other copies. With Allah lies all success and may the Peace and Blessing of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and companions.

Q: The copies of the Qur’an and books that are ripped and torn, as well as those books that are not used, what should be done with them? Should they be burned or buried?

A: Those ripped pages from the Mushaf or from books which mention Allah or have therein the statements of Mustaphah (i.e. the Prophet Muhammad sallAllahu ‘alahi wasallam), there is no problem in burying them in a clean place or burning them, and with Allah lies all success and may the Peace and Blessing of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and companions.
