Shaykhul-Islaam Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah (rahimahullah) stated:
Whoever from amongst them is patient upon these trials; he attains salvation from that which is greater than it. Whoever is afflicted by these trials falls into that which is more evil than it. (However), if he follows that up with the sincere repentance (then he will be safe). If not, then he will be upon the path of those who are destroyed. Based upon this the Prophet ﷺ stated:
I have not left after me a trial more harmful than the women upon the men.
Therefore, the servant is tested by way of his desires in the life of this world. He's also tested by the portion of the soul that commands with evil, his devil (that accompanies him) who seeks to mislead him and beautifies (for him evil). He's also tested by his companions and that which he witnesses, which his patience is incapable regarding. What accompanies that is the weakness of faith and certainty, the weaknesses of the heart and the bitterness of patience. Also there's the tasting of that which is (from) the immediate (pleasures) and the inclination of the soul to the delights of the life of this world. Also the recompense being delayed until another life other than this abode which the person has been created in and raised in. For this he is made responsible to leave off his present desires which he witnesses, for the unseen which he is required to believe in.
