It was stated by Shaykhul-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah (Rahimahullah):

(Remaining) silent without reading, remembering Allah, and supplicating is not worship, and nor is it commanded with. But rather, this opens the door for the whispers (of the shaytān). Therefore, it is better to busy oneself with the remembrance of Allah than to (remain) silent.
