Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymīn, may Allah have mercy upon him, said,

When you say “astaghfirullah” you’re asking Allah for two things, and they are:

1. To conceal the sin.
2. To overlook the sin so that Allah doesn’t punish you for it.
